Hamadān or Hamedān is the capital city of Hamadan Province of Iran, and believed to be among the oldest of Iranian cities. The province lies in an elevated region, with the 'Alvand' mountains, running from the north west to the south west.
Hamadan city is a centre for trading with carpets that are manufactured in the hundreds from nearby villages and cities. They are easily recognized by their varying patterns; the medallion and repeated patterns occur frequently. Among individual patterns the Herati is the most common pattern and the colours are dominated by different nuances of indigo blue and madder red.
